Handicapping – Fountain of Youth?

Handicapping – Fountain of Youth?

Can handicapping keep your brain young?

There is a lot of new evidence out there that indicate that in fact it could not only keep your brain functioning at a higher capacity, but can even help regenerate new brain cells and brain cell connections – and turn your mental clock around.

Now, I know not all of you are of the age that you might yet have even considered this, but if you aren’t there yet – you will be.

It has been discovered that in most people brain functioning begins to fade from optimal somewhere during their mid-thirties. We are born with some 100 billion brain cells (I wonder who counted them?!) with a quadrillion of these connections – neurons and their synapses. And one of the keys to keeping the brain young – to prevent the dying off of these cells and their connectors – is to continually challenge the brain with new problem solving situations.

What could fit the bill better than handicapping a horse race?

Every race is different – the challenge remains ever-new. There has even been recent research that certain aspects of using the computer will help increase cognitive functions and mental dexterity.

Here is how one of the intellectual ‘white coat’ types – Dr. Konstantinos Arfanakis describes it, “We discovered that elderly persons with a high frequency of cognitive activity have higher microstructural integrity in brain white matter than persons with lower frequency of cognitive activity,” Arfanakis said. “Since the microstructural integrity of white matter naturally declines with age, our findings suggest that cognitive activity in late life may be protecting cognition by maintaining the condition of brain wiring.”

Whew! – but which is just another way of saying “use it or lose it!

There is, however, a potential bug in the ointment . . .

It is also now known that ‘stress’ can decrease brain functioning and counteract the positive results of handicapping. Of course when you are betting according to the results of your handicapping, and lose, stress levels can elevate – most particularly if the money lost is money needed for important aspects of one’s life – like the mortgage!

So – it’s as if the Fountain of Youth is there waiting for you, but the player needs to have long-term profitable results to prevent the ‘stress’ part of the equation from cancelling out the positive benefits of the handicapping exercise.

A couple of other factors of great importance for optimal brain functioning are; physical exercise, and mental relaxation.

Break the handicapping and betting up with short bursts of at least mildly energetic exercise – a fast walk around the yard, a few jumping jacks – etc. And also take a few minutes every so often during your race day to simply relax the brain – think of a time, place or event you have loved and been extremely happy, visualize it, dissolve back into it . . .

. . . then return to the challenge at hand with renewed vigor – and maybe a few million extra brain connectors!

  1. Handicapping is the BEST puzzle ….and the thing is you find out if you are correct in just a couple of minutes …:)
Time is the biggest factor for me …..playing everyday ( well
5 days …weds -sun)…..when you have a good method of
isolating the races you are successful at (record keeping fellas)
and a good method that produces an edge for those races…
its not only fun to handicap but profitable!! ( no profits
in doing the crossword puzzle …:) I find it keeps my thinking sharp and enjoy it very much. Even using a “method” that someone else has come up with (Gary )…what you are doing is using that persons research…..which you then must “Trust” or …validate for yourself ….again thats record keeping……very very important ….because that gives you the courage or confidence to then stick with it during the
“bad” periods …which you will experience. So this game can be a help in many ways …..disciple ….and sharop thinking and of course profits !!

    • Joe – Thanks for the comments – I’m in total agreement.

One comment on the use of our methods. I have indicated several times in various places that I hope folks will take the methods we put out and “run with them.” I.e. – do further research, tweek, optimize, modify – and turn them into something of your own. This further enhances the “keep your brain young” aspect and will give a greater sense of initiative and personal involvement.

I know that many players simply want a “black box” – the old “just gimme the winners so I can cash the checks” mentality, but I don’t feel this is the right approach for long term success, nor for keeping the brain sharp.

As you stated, Joe – record keeping is crucial – and the only really trustworthy records are those compiled from one’s own actual wagers (not paper betting after the fact).

  2. I USED TO READ ALOT BUT AT 63 I FOUND MYSELF GETTING BORED WITH JUST READING,SO AFTER MANY YEARS OF NOT DOING ANY HANDICAPPING FOR LACK OF TIME,I NOW HANDICAP EVERY FRI-SUN AND FOUND THAT MY MIND HAS TO WORK MUCH HARDER THEN IT DID WITH READING ONLY.HANDICAPPING TO ME IS NOW MY ESCAPE FROM BOREDOM AND NON USE OF ANY BRAIN CELLS,WITH NO PRESSURE ABOUT WINNING AND LOSING.I MAY FIND 5 TO 10 RACES THAT I BET ON,BUT I HAVE ALSO JOINED A FEW LEAGUES THAT I HAVE TO HANDICAP SO THERE IS NO REAL STRESS INVOLVED.FOR ME IT HAS MADE MY MIND MUCH SHARPER IN OTHER AREAS OF MY LIFE AND REALLY TAKEN SOME STRESS OUT OF MY LIFE BY NOT WORRYING ABOUT MY MIND BEING GONE TOMORROW

    • Terry – Thanks for the comments. The way you describe it is exactly how I think it works, or could work, for a lot of folks. – Gary
